REFUSED BY U.S.A.

SPAIN’S APPEAL FOR ARMS AND AMMUNITION Recd. 11 p.m. New York, Aug. 24. The United States has refused General Franco’s request lor the sale of arms and ammunition to Spain. The New York Times’ Lon-aon correspondent learns from a trustworthy source that the refusal followed Sir Samuel Hoare’s visit to General Franco, in the course of which he demanded that. Spain abandon non-bel-ligerency in favour of neutrality. Washington’s decision was reached without consultations with Britain, although the British Government was immediately informed of it. The Times points out that the rejection is one of the first positive acts in the United States policy towards Spain and may have a greater influence in swinging Spain to the Allied alignment, than Sir Samuel Hoare’s talks with Genera) Franco.
