MARTON NOTES

ACCLIMATISATION YEAR OPENING OF SHOOTING SEASON “Very favourable reports have been received regarding fishing in the lakes of the district. Several good catches of rainbow trout have been made, and fish weighing up to Bibs are frequently taken from Lake William. One of the best catches at Gudopp's Lake recently was a basket of five fish averaging sibs, which were taken in three hours in the early morning. The Rangitikei River has again disappointed all anglers, as very few fish have been taken, and tre river has been abandoned by local anglers,” reported Mr. G. T. Avery, hon. secretary of the Marton branch, at a committee meeting on Wednesday evening. Mr. G. L. Marshall presided, and there were also present: Messrs. E. Gudopp, J. Simpson, A. H. Hopkins. W. Twigg, H. W. Gudopp, K. Vance, H. Frederick, and G. T. Avery, hon. secretary.

The secretary reported on the first communication that he had received from the council for the past twelve months, and it was possible that, having invited the licence-holders to attend this committee meeting, definite steps had been taken by the Wellington Acclimatisation Society to obtain the opening of the shooting season for 1943.

The chairman commented on the laxity of the council in not answering correspondence over an extensive period. The chairman nroposed that, on account of the small amount of ammunition available, it be distributed among visiting servicemen to the Dominion. The motion was seconded by Mr. E. Gudopp and carried. It was decided that representations be made to the council that sub-com-mittees should participate in matters of importance brought before the council before any discussion is arrived at.

Marton branch delegates stated that they had received instructions not to attend meetings unless specially requested by the council. The annua] meeting of the Marton branch will be held on Monday. April 14. subject to confirmation of the place of meeting by the Bulls meeting of the committee. Since the above committee meeting was held a letter has been received by the Wellington Acclimatisation Society from the Minister of Internal Affairs, m which he announces that there is to be an onen season for waterfowl shooting from May 1 to May 16 inclusive, and a game shooting season in the society’s district of three months, as recommended by n. The Minister expresesd his regret that there is no hope of any further] ammunition being released. Ducks Reduce Wheat Yield. “Ducks are particularly plentiful, and are considerable damage to grain crops,” it was stated in a letter received by the Wellington Acclimatisation Society from one of its rangers, Mr. T. Andrews. It was mentioned that a crop cut and stocked was reduced from an estimated yield of 45 bushels an acre to a 25-bushel yield at threshing by a flock of about 1000 ducks, which settled at nightfall and fed on the grain. HUNTERVILLE PATRIOTIC SPORTS RECORD RECEIPTS At a recent meeting of the Hunterville Snorts Club it was disclosed that the net profit resulting from the patriotic sports meeting held on February 6 reached the record total of £l5O Is lid. In addition to this sum, the Red Cross shop, held on the same day, showed a net return of £76 Ils 3d. This means that the district’s patriotic funds will benefit to the ex. ent of £226 13s 2d from the day’s effort. The committee of the Hunterville Sports Club wish to thank all those who contributed so liberally in various ways and so helped to make the day an outstanding success. CIVIC THEATRE, MARtON A joyous time is promised when nicture-goers see the latest version of the famous stage farce, “My Wife’s Family,” at the Civic Theatre tomorrow. Charlie Clapham, one of the chief funsters of the variety stage, is co-starred with John Warwick, and there are plenty of gags and wisecracks to keep them busy. The theme tells of an interfering mother-in-law’s visit to newly-weds in the country, and her encounters with one, Dr. Knott, played by Clapham. Chief supporting roles are capably handled by Patricia Roc, Wylie Watson, Margaret Scudamore, Chili Bouchier, and Peggy Bryan, George Formby’s leading lady in “It’s Turned Out Nice Again.” NATIONAL SAVINGS As the result of a good sale of National Savings £lOO bonds. Marton reached its quota on Thursday morning for the 74th successive week.
