GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI

HORSES FOR SATURDAY Palmerston North, March 17. Horses engaged at the Manawatu meeting on Saturday were galloped at Awapuni yesterday under very favourable conditions. The course proper, with the flags just under forty feet out, was in great order. Alethea (A. Midwood) and Nighean (R. B. Ireland) were sent a mile, and both were going well at the finish after cutting the distance out in 1.50. It was a satisfactory trial, for they were given time to find their feet. Stairway (A. S. Ewan) and Gladynev (A. G. Waddell) also ran a mile in 1.50. They had lightweights up, but they covered some extra ground. Lord Cavendish (Ireland) and Ramaiti (Midwood) were timed to run a mile in 1.52 3-5. They were stopping at the finish, but they travelled very fast for the first five furlongs. Native Chief (E Temperton) also galloped a mile. He was timed to run the last seven in 1.37, which was good. Kanui Te Pai (W. J. Broughton) and Flying Hawk (A. G. Waddell) went particularly well over seven furlongs, and there was little between them after running the distance in I. 3-5. Screen (Broughton), looking better for her Wellington race, slipped over seven in 1.37 3-5. She was travelling smoothly at the finish. Damask (Waddell), Kaitoa (Bowry) and Solver (Ewan) were in that order, but at wide intervals, at the end of seven furlongs. Damask ran the distance in 1.38 2-5. Lady Virginia (Ireland) and War Credit (Andrews) were on terms at the end of six furlongs in 1.22. Etruscan (Broughton) and Coronado (T. Paul) were timed to run the last five of six furlongs in 1.9. Greek Effort (Ireland) and Social Climber (Midwood) were going well with little between them at the end of five furlongs in 1.8. Sir Bradbury (Andrews), after being given time to find his feet, ran five furlongs easily in 1.6. Sterling Lad (Paul) and Colerica (Broughton) were together at the end of five furlongs in 1.7. Beau Monde ,Miss Freda White) and Cuisinier (P. Brady) were schooled over four hurdles, Cuisinier giving the better display. Pay Roil and Colossal Chief also gave a satisfactory exhibition over four hurdles. After-Breakfast Work. There was an interesting lot of jumping after breakfast. Foxiana (D. W. Redstone) went twice round over the schooling hurdles. Colonel Bogey (J. Fagan), who has been leased by Mr. C. T. Thorburn, and Royal Lack (E. Temperton), a fast jumper, gave a good display in a similar task, and Vitement (Fagan) went twice round over the schooling hurdles.
