CARDINAL HINSLEY DEAD

Recd. 11 p.m. London, March 17. The death occurred early this morning of Cardinal Hinsley. head of the Roman Catholic Church in England, at his country home, Buntingford, Hertfordshire.

Cardinal Hinsley, who was a gifted speaker and a man of genial personality, had been ill for several weeks. More than a week ago his condition began to cause anxiety and he received the last Sacrament. He had a distinguished career and his death is a great loss to the Catholic Church in England. Born in 1865 at Carlton, near Selby, Yorkshire, Cardinal Hinsley was the son of a joiner and builder and was educated at Ushaw and the English College, Rome, subsequently taking his B.A. degree at the London University in 1899. He was headmaster of St. Bede’s Grammar School, Bedford, from 1899 till 1904. For the next seven years he was the popular parish priest at Sutton Park, followed by a period of six years in a similar capacity at Sydenham. In 1917 he was made rector of the English College at Rome. In that capacity he was agent for all the Catholic diocesan bishops except Cardinal Bourne. Cardinal Hinsley was given the arduous task in 1930 of Apostolic Delegate to Africa, where he accomplished much good work. After he had served four years in this capacity the late Pope Pius XI. appointed him Archbishop of Westminster, England, in succession to the late Cardinal Bourne. In 1937 he was elevated to th.e rank of cardinal. But for the outbreak of the war Cardinal Hinsley would have visited New Zealand in 1940 for the National Eucharistic Congress, held in Wellington in February of that year.
