WOOL PRICE INCREASE

FARMERS TO PROTEST AT PUBLIC MEETING

The decision of the Government to pay in non-negotiable stock a portion of the 15 per cent, increase granted by the United Kingdom Government on last season’s wool clip is meeting with considerable opposition by the farmers of the Dominion. The Wanganui Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Unionihas, at the request of a large nunte* of its members, decided to call a public meeting of farmers to be held on Wednesday, March 24, at 2 p.m., when the farmers will have an opportunity of registering their protest. Another matter which has caused dissatisfaction is the withholding of 1.2 per cent, of the increase in wool from the farmers to make good the difference in value between locally-used wool and the exported clip. That, it is claimed, is tantamount to making the sheep farmers pay a subsidy to the woollen mills who, at the present time, are engaged almost exclusively on war contracts. Invitations to attend the public meeting have been sent to Mr. Lloyd Hammond, a member of the Dominion Executive of the Farmers’ Union, land to Mr. W. S, Glenn, president of I the Sheepowners’ Federation of New Zealand.
