EXCELLENT SERVICE

N.Z. WAR UNIT IN SYDNEY.

Congratulations from the National Patriotic Fund Board have been sent to the New Zealand Auxiliary War Unit of New South Wales on its excellent record of achievement on behalf of New Zealand servicemen passing through Sydney. The members of the organisation are New Zealanders who have banded together in Sydney to do war work. The patrons are Lady Julius and Mr. W. Taylor, New Zealand Government Commissioner, Mr. A. Ft. Cameron, manager of the New Zealand Press Association’s office in Sydney, is chairman, and Mrs Linda Ferguson is the hon. organising secretary. Through Mr. Taylor, who represents the board, grants are made by the Patriotic Fund Board to the unit, whose first responsibility has been the care of N.Z.E.F. men who have passed through Sydney on their way overseas, or returning home, the latter class including invalided men. Hospitality extended has embraced various functions, tours, swimming parties, dances, etc., and in addition members of the unit have entertained the New Zealanders in their homes. The unit was also able to help men of the Royal New Zealand Navy who lost their possessions when the Japanese submarines raided Sydney harbour. Sewing and knitting bees are conducted regularly, the unit helps to staff the Anzac Buffet in Svdney, which is open to all men of the services, including the Merchant Navy, and also takes part in other important war work, including Commonwealth loan anneals and drives for books, etc. Close association is maintained with Major F. W. Mothes, New Zealand Liaison Officer in Svdrtey, and also with the various Australian patriotic organisations. Last year the Prime Minister (Mr. Fraser)' was a visitor to the unit's rooms and he snoke in glowing terms of the work being done by the unit.
