SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL HUNTERVILLE-RATA PATRIOTIC SOCIETIES There was a large attendance at the social and dance held in the Hunterville Hall last week. The function was organised by the combined Huntervine and Rata Patriotic Societies in honour of boys on leave. The music was supplied by ‘the over-popular “Midnight Revellers” Dance Band. Extras were played by Mrs. Wereta and party from Rata. A yodelling item by Miss Nancy Twigg, of Marton, was very popular and she had to respond to a recall. Speeches were made by Mr. R. A. Gordon and Mr. C. McManaway, chairmen of the Hunterville and Rata Patriotic Societies, respectively, and Mr. R. M. S. Jones and Mr. E. Pickford for the Returned Services’ Association. Private Ken Robertson replied on behalf of the boys. A delicious supper was served by the ladies’ committee. Mr. A. Henwood efficiently carried out the duties of M.C. The guests of honour were K. Robertson, M. Voyce, H. Boswell, F. Pollington (of Hunterville) and B. Stevens (Rata). RANGITIKEI POTATO-GROWERS’ ASSOCIATION A general meeting is called of th? Rangitikei Potato-growers’ Association and will be held in the .Marton Jockey Club’s rooms on Monday, March 22, at 8 p.m. MARTON R.S.A. An invitation is extended to all returned servicemen from the present war to meet the committee of the Marton Returned Services’ Association in the Marton Borough Council Chambers on Monday, March 22, at 8 p.m. CIVIC THEATRE, MARTON Hardy Family enthusiasts will have a new picture to cheer about in the latest of the group, “Life Begins For i Andy Hardy,” at the Civic Theatre to-night. The picture strikes one of the most important notes ever to be introduced in these pictures, principally the problems that face a youngster upon graduation from high i school. Whether to go on to college I or go to work is the problem that faces Andy, as it faces so many other | youngsters. Andy chose to leave home and work for a month, to thus make a clearer decision. What happens when he cuts family ties to go to New York, get a job, and go out on his own, makes for one of the most gripping as well as entertaining films of the group. SOLDIER HONOURED An enjoyable evening was spent with cards and dancing recently when 40 residents of the Turakina Valley met ac the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. Playle to honour Private Ronald Grice, who was on leave. Tributes to Private Grice were paid by Mr. Douglas Cameron when making a presentation of a leather wallet. Mr. D. Franke also added his tribute.
