“GRAVE MISTAKE”

ELECTION THIS YEAR Wellington, March 12. “I think it is absolutely criminal,” declared the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre (Nelson) in the Legislative Council yesterday afternoon in reference . to the decision to hold a General Election this year. Mr. Mclntyre said that Parliament had made a grave mistake when it decided to divide the people into classes by an election at the present time, when the menace of Japan was still great. He was satisfied that the man in the street did not want an election. It would cost £BO,OOO which, would be better given to patriotic funds, and there would also be a waste of petrol and tyres. The election itself might have the undesirable result of a few Indpendents controlling the country. There should be no election for the duration of the war and twelve months thereafter.

The Hon. W. Black (Nelson) said that the Government had done everything possible to try to keep the people united, and it was no fault of the Government that arrangements for a united Government broke down. In the circumstances the only thing to do was to give the people the right of an election as soon as possible.
