TARANAKI PILOT

SHOT DOWN DORNIER BOMBER (Recd. 6 p.m.) London, Feb. 18. Pilot-Officer Harold B. Newtown, of Urenui, Taranaki, piloting a Beaufighter shot down a Dornier near the South Wales coast on February 16. He sighted four enemy fliers, the first one disappearing with two large fires in an engine. He then encountered two flying together. One escaped but the other he sent down in flames. Later, another raider dived with smoke pouring from its starboard engine after being attacked, but it was not seen to crash. Newtown was interned in Portugal in 1941, when he made a forced landing while on his way to Gibraltar, but he returned to England in January. 1942.
