PROPOSED INCREASE

AUSTRALIAN SOLDIERS’ PENSIONS (Recd. 6 p.m.) Canberra, Feb. 18. Strong pressure is being brought to bear to induce the Government to grant the proposed 20 per cent, rise in the scale of soldiers’ pensions. This rise is authorised by the Australian Soldiers’ Repatriation Bill now before the House of Representatives. A 20 per cent, increase in war pension rates is estimated to involve an immediate cost of over £1,500,000. The Bill also authorises war pensions and other benefits for the women’s auxiliary services, and places the onus of proof on the repatriation commission, instead of on applicants for a pension.
