AUTOMOBILE AFFAIRS

WANGANUI ASSOCIATION MEETS Thirty-two new members were elected at Wednesday night’s meeting of the Automobile Association (Wanganui). Resignations received numbered 51, these being mostly due to petrol restrictions, cars being laid up and transfers to other associations. The membership stands at 4363, as against 4384 at the end of November. The president. Mr. P. D. England, remarked that in view of the times the way 'the membership was holding up was most satisfactory. Patrols reported that about 12 new signs had been repaired in the Taihape district, and that in the Wanganui area 50 signs had been replaced between Wanganui and Maxwell. It was decided to replace all main road signs in the Wanganui area. It was brought to the notice of the meeting that many members failed to at inch the annual sticker to their windscreens, and this made it difficult for patrols at public gatherings to recognise members’ cars. It was pointed out that if stickers were torn or destroyed new ones were available at the nearest A.A. office, free of charge.

A decision was made to hold a meeting of the Child Safety Education Committee so that a programme could be drawn up for the coming year. The aim of this service is to train motorists of the future, and as children are leaving and others are taking their place it was imperative that instruction and lectures by the patrols be continued. It was reported that 90 schools out of 110 had been visited and that 10.500 children had been lectured to and had seen the road safety film. School patrols appointed numbered 59. Those present were Messrs. P. D. England (president), W. S. N. Rennie, N. R. Bain, G. W. Sampson, S. G. Whittai], W. E. Fossette, E. Cole, Patrol Grey and the secretary (Mr. F. J. Hill).'
