SHALE OIL INDUSTRY

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT IN AUSTRALIA Canberra, Feb. 17. Plans to develop the New South Wales shale oil fields at Newnes and Baerajni to produce more than 75,000,000 gallons of oil annually are outlined in a report prepared by Ameriican experts for the Commonwealth I Government. The project which 'would entail an expenditure of more | than £5,500,000, has been referred to ithe Parliamentary Public Works Committee for inquiry. At present, Newnes produces about 17,000,000 gallons of oil a year. The American report recommends the completion of the works within a year and a-half in order to reduce as soon as possible the number of tankers required to deliver oil to Australia.
