SUCCESSFUL GARDEN PARTY.

WANGAEHU RED CROSS.

With ideal weather and beautiful surroundings the Wangaehu Red Cross garden party which was held at the residence ot Mr. and Mrs. W. Craig last Saturday for the purpose of assisting the local sub-centre lunds, proved highly successful, the sum ot £6B 14s net being handed in, of which £l7 5s was in cash donations. This welcome addition to the funds will enable the sub-centre to meet further calls which from time to time will be made upon it.

Mrs. Craig welcomed the visitors’and hoped they would spend a pleasant hour. A special feature of the afternoon was items by the Ratana Maori Concert Party, which were staged on the lawn, the greenery of tne trees forming a natural background, their items being rendered in their usual graceful and pleasing manner. Onlookers spoke in high praise ot these talented artists. A visitor well acquainted with the accomplished Otaki Maoris expressed the opinion that the afternoon’s entertainment was of a nigh standard. Attractive amusements were in evidence, the games providing much enjoyment, and the comptitions drawing much patronage. The well-laden stall did brisk traue, and callers at the ice cream stall, soon did so in vain. The gate takings were £6 3s. The games and competitions brought in £2l Bs, while £7 12s ud goes to tne credit of the stall and £1 16s to the ice cream.

The winners of the games were as follows: Clock golf, Mrs. Jones and Mr. Colin Jones; ladder croquet, Miss D. Castles. Mr. P. Jones and Mrs. Holmes tying. The correct weight ol the pumpkin which was guessed byMrs. Baldwin, Mrs. Healey and Mr. Olsen, was 551bs. The ham very kindly donated by Mr. Wigglesworth was won by Mrs. M. Bignell and a nicelyworked lady’s nightgown, made and donated by Mrs. Wigglesworth, was won by Mrs. Chadfield, Mrs. Collins oeing the winner of the charming little reticule, worked and donated by Mrs. Craig. A delicious afternoon tea was handed round by members to a large gathering, while the Maoris again delighted the visitors with interspersed items.

Later in the afternoon the opportunity was taken by Mr. Mackintosh to express on behalf of those present, their appreciation of Mr. and Mrs. Craig's kindness in placing their grounds at the disposal of the Red Cross, and also thanked all who had in any way contributed to the success of the effort. Activities continued until late and so ended a happy and successful afternoon.
