OBITUARY

DR H. G. DENHAM. The death has occurred of Dr. H. G. Denham, rector of Canterbury University College, states a Press Association message from Christchurch. Dr. Denham was born in Christchurch in 1880, and was educated at the Christchurch Boys’ High School and Canterbury College, where he gained his M.A. He was M.Sc. (N.Z.), D.Sc. (Liverpool), Ph.D. (Heidelberg), F.I.C. and F.R.S.N.Z. In 1906-09 he was Exhibition Research Scholar. He _ was lecturer in chemistry and assistant professor of the University of Queensland from 1912 to 1921 and professor of inorganic chemistry. University of Capetown, from 1921 to 1922. He has ben a member of the . Council of Scientific and Industrial Research since 1926 and was elected chairman in 1934. Other organisations on which he served with the Canterbury College Board of Governors, Canterbury Agricultural College, Christ’s College Board of Governors, and the Christchurch Rotary Club. Early this year he was elected an honorary member of the Society of Chemical Industry, Great Britain. MR. J. C. EWINGTON

The death occurred at the week-end of one of Masterton’s most prominent Citizens in Mr. Joseph diaries Bwmgton. Mr. Ewington died following a se.zure while playing bowis at the Masterton Park Bowling Club.' He was 82 years of age and had a lifetime of public services. Mr. Ewington was a member of the Masterton Bor- | ough Council for 15 years, of the Wai- i rarapa Hospital Board for 30 years, I since its inception; chairman of the Masterton Co-operative Dairy Co., I Ltd., for more than 30 years; a direc- I tor of the Producers’ Co-operative Agency; chairman of the Co-operative Dairy Producers' Freezing Co., Ltd.., Wellington; a director of the Workers’ Mutual Benefit Building Society and chairman of the Masterton Unemployment Committee. Mr. Ewington was well known in Masonic circles, bavin;, been a member of Lodge 19, Master- i ton. for many years. He was a mem- , ber of the Masterton Foresters’ Lodge j since 1884. He was Chief Ranger 1892-1893. and he was senior trustee for a long period of years. He was a member of the Red Star Football Club in his younger days and was a life member of the Masterton Fire Brigade. Mr. Ewington is survived by his widow, a daughter, Miss Violet Ewington, and two sons. Messrs. J. J. Ewington and A. C. Ewington. MR. A. E. MILLS Mr. Alfred Edward. Mills, a former chief inspector of the Bank of New Zealand died in Wellington on Sunday. Mr. Mills joined the bank in August, 1884, serving continuously till his retirement in March, 1920. He was appointed manager of the Blenheim branch in 1902, and became inspector at the head office in 1906. In 1910 Ihe was acting general manager for the greater part of the year, and in 1912 became chief inspector, a post ht held tijl his retirement. His wife, formerly Miss Jane Grey Crawford, whom he married in Auckland, died six years ago this month, and there are two children. Mrs Arthur Luke. Wellington, well-known in musical circles as Miss Dorothy Mills, and Dr. Arnold Mills, director of the Institute of Preventive Medicine at Bagdad.
