RAETIHI NEWS

WAIMARINO A.P.H. AND I. ASSOCIATION. (0.C.) Raetihi, Feb. 16. At a meeting of the committee of the above association held on Saturday evening, Mr. A. Scarrow presided over a good attendance. The committee decided to hold its annual rodeo and sports meeting on Saturday, March o, 1943, the following programme being arranged: — Steer-riding, two classes professional, with a £2O prize, and amateur with £3 and 30s as prizes; numerous horse jumps and other events; chopping contests, involving prize money to the extent of £3O; tug-of-war (six-men teams); 4-man relay lace of 440 yards, with goo-d money prizes; calfriding; and running events for children. i The teas and luncheons to be conducted by the local Patriotic Committee. Side-shows would be in evidence and it was expected that soldiers from a camp, together with the camp military band would be in attendance.

It was reported that the Raetihi ram fair, which was conducted by the association, was a great success, an entry of 315 rams from wellknown breeders being offered. There was keen competition for the better class of rams and excellent prices were realised, the top price for Southdowns being 11 guineas and for Romneys 9 guineas. Satisfaction was expressed by both breeders and buyers on the quality of the rams and on the prices realised. At the close of the meeting members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the late Mr. C. D. Scarrow, the association’s late patron, who had given great service to the association over a long period of years. W.W.S.A. DRILL CLASS.

Members of the W.W.S.A. drill class turned up in force on Monday evening, before the first assembly for this year. Many of the girls were in uniform for the first time and it is hoped that more uniforms will be procurable in the future. Those who were in uniform certainly locked very smart and when marching in column of route along the main street drew forth many admiring remarks.

During the evening the president of the W.W.S.A., Mrs. L. Baird, addressed the members, expressing her pleasure at the good attendance and welcoming new members. She also reported that the W.W.S.A. had had an urgent call the previous week from the Government farms scheme for a number of women to help pick pease in the district, and about 18 members from Raetihi had volunteered for the work and had between them picked approximately 30001 b. of peas in the two days allotted to them. This, said Mrs. Baird, was a .splendid effort and was much appreciated by those who had appealed lor workers, as evidenced by a letter which she read, from the Field Inspce'coi of tht Agricultural Division. Mrs. A. H. larker then addressed the members for a short time on the work of the Spuming Circle and mentioned that their members had spun approximately 3000 skeins of wool up to December last. She appealed co all those interested to join their circle and help in this work.
