LABOURER FINED
DISOBEYING MANPOWER OFFICER'S ORDER
(P.A.) Wellington, Feb. 12. In the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. A. W. Gouldlng, S.M., Richard Cheyne, labourer, aged 55, was charged with a breach ot the Industrial Manpower Emergency Regulations. 1942, by failing to comply with a direction from the district manpower olticer, Wellington, that he undertake work as a labourer in August for Downer and Co., Ltd., on a building contract. Fining Cheyne £lO and costs, Mr. Goulding said that it was a serious matter to disregard an order from a manpower officer. The regulations provided for a line up to £5O or imprisonment for three months, and courts would not hesitate to impose imprisonment in appropriate cases. Cheyne thought he could please himself and take work which suited him better and gave him more money, but that was not the point—he was in the war just as much as tha soldiers and must obey the directions given by the manpower officer.
