PUBLIC WORKS SET-UP

NEW POLICY ANNOUNCED BY MR. SEMPLE (P.A.) Auckland, Feb. 15. “There is to be a new set-up of the control and administration of public works” stated the Minister ot Puolic Works, the Hon. R. Semple, in an interview. “Under this, all housing construction, defence works, roading, erection of public buildings, irrigation and hydro-electric schemes, which have hitherto been under separate departments, will be brought under one control.” Mr. Semple said he would, under this new set-up, be Minister of Works and Rehabilitation and would have associated with him an executive of construction comprising three or four highly-qualified men and architects. Their job would be to plan for the future, and every project would be thoroughly examined before a single penny was spent. It would not be a case of just planning for the day. “There will be complete co-ordina-tion of every phase of activity in relation to the construction of houses and other works associated with postwar rehabilitation,” he added. .
