ARMY DAMAGE TO ROADS

FREE GRANTS TO COUNTY Whangarei, Feb. 15. Free grants totalling more than £3OOO were being issued to cover the cost of extraordinary maintenance necessitated through Army traffic on roads and highways, according to advice from the No. 1 District Highways Council received by the Whangarei County Council on Friday. The council was reminded that the grants originally had been offered on the understanding that county expenditure for this year approximated the average sum for the last three years. This meant that as far as the highways mentioned were concerned subsidies must be lifted before the free special grants for these highways were operated upon. The engineer, Mr. J. No’rris, said that one road was omitted from the free grants, the difficulty being that the Army would not be respoiislbl for damage to roads caused by th • Air Force.

The question was referred to th Minister of Defence, the Hon. F Jones.
