GREY AVENUE PROJECT AT AUCKLAND BUILDING F<Jr 450 PEOPLE "The properties in Grey Avenue, Auckland, which were purchased by the Housing Department, and to which the Auckland City Council contributed £25,000, have been completely surveyed, and the buildings to be erected on the west side o£ the street have been designed,” stated the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, at Wellington, speaking as Minister in Charge of Housing. A model ol the 130 flats on the western side had been made, Mr. Fraser continued, and clearly demonstrated that the buildings would provide not only housing, but something entirely new from an architectural standpoint in the city of Auckland. The flats were to be of three types, according to the number of bedrooms —three, two or one. Each would have a large lounge-room and balcony, in addition to the usual kitchen, bathroom and storage space. The western group would provide accommodation for 450 people and the total number of flats on both sides of the avenue would be approximately 220. "Consideration has been given to ensure that these flats will receive the maximum sunshine,” added Mr. Fraser. "All the rooms will get the sun at some time of the day and the balconies, bedrooms and lounge-rooms practically all da< The Grey Avenue development scheme is only one of many that have been engaging the attention of architects and engineers of the Town-Planning and Housing Departments. As soon as the defence programme of building has been overtaken, contracts will be entered into, so that all available labour and material can be devoted to the erection of the thousands of homes that are necessary.”
