APPEAL BY H. P. STEWART DISMISSED

SUSPENSION TERM REDUCED BY THREE MONTHS (P.A.) Wellington, Jan. 26. The appeal of H. P. Stewart, apprentice jockey, against a decision of the Auckland District Committee has been dismissed by the judges of the New Zealand Racing Conference but a reduction was made in the length of the suspension of Stewart’s licence. Stewart’s appeal was against this decision of the Auckland District, Committee, given on December 28. 1942: “That the appeal lodged by C. Gomer, stipendiary steward, against the penalty imposed by the Waipa Racing Club on Stewart (a fine of £5) be upheld, and that the penalty be increased by the suspension of Stewart’s jockey licence for the balance of the current racing season.” The judges, after hearing Stewart, Gomer and counsel for appellant, found that Stewart failed to ride his horse out to the end of the race; did not consider the explanation given by him for so doing sufficient warrant for removing the suspension imposed by the Auckland Committee, and considered him to have been guilty of a gross error of judgment, especially as he is an experienced jockey. They were of the opinion, however, that the period of suspension imposed by the Auckland Committee too lengthy for such an error, and reduced the term to expire on Aoril 30, 1943, instead of July 31, 1943.
