AUCKLAND TRAMCARS
RESTORATION OF NORMAL LIGHTING (P.A.) Auckland, Jan. 1. A start with the restoration of normal lighting in tramcars has been made by the Auckland Transport Board on its own initiative. No instruction from the Dominion Lighting Controller has been received on the subject of public vehicle lighting, but it has been decided by Transport Board oilicials that in view of the general measure of relaxation of lighting restrictions it was an opportunity to reduce the hazards that have existed on trams since the blackout was enforced. A very large number of minor mishaps and narrow escapes from accidents have occurred on trams, particularly during the winter, as a result of the insufficient platform and step lighting. Many disembarking passengers, unable to tell whether a tram approaching a stop had actually come to a standstill, have stepped off while it was still coasting gently, with unpleasant consequences, and tram crews, in their turn, have been give much anxiety, being unable to see when passengers were boarding or alighting.
