U.S. DESTROYER ARRIVES IN AMERICAN PORT (Recd. 7.15 p.m.) New York, Dec. 31. The destroyer McFarland arrived under her own power with a temporary stern jury rudder lashioned of telephone poles installed in the Solomons. where nine Japanese torpedoplanes caught the vessel in the channel between Guadalcanar and Tulagi on October 16, while she was transferring petrol to tugs. Much of the petrol cargo was saved but casualties were heavy, including walking wounded from Guadalcanar.
