CANADA’S WAR EFFORT
| Sydney, Dec. 31. WhtTi the war started. Canada’s navy had 12 ships; it now has 500. said the new Canadian High Commissioner to Australia, Mr. Justice T. C. Davis, when he arrived in Sydney and spoke of Canada’s war effort. He succeeds Major-General V. W. Odium, who has been appointed at Canada’s first Minister to China. Although the Canadian Government had power to conscript men for military service overseas, it had not yet found the measure necessary, said Mr. Davis. The army, which had 4500 men at the outbreak of the war, now had 350.000. exclusive of the home reserve of 150.000. The Canadian Air Force had grown from 5000 at the outbreak of the war to 135.000, and had 25 operational squadrons in Britain. Canada was producing over 400 war planes, including Lancaster bombers, every month.
