TEA AMID BOMBS

Melbourne. Dec, 22. Javanese sailors who participated on board a Netherlands merchant vessel in recent Allied landings at Bougie Bay, Algeria, were described by their Dutch captain as “some of natures gentlemen, fearless, faithful, enthusiastic,” states the Free Netherlands press agency. During a fierce air attack on the vessel, with bombs falling all around, a Javanese boy appeared on the bridge, calmly offering a cup of tea to the captain. The later admitted that he was so surprised at being thus interrupted, that he ordered the boy off the bridge. Later, however, he apologised to the Javanese boy and complimented him on his thoughtfulness and courage. Dutch and Indonesian members of the crew all insisted on participating in driving off the enemy aircraft. Even the barber, cook and stewards were busily loading and firing guns.
