DINNER FROM SKY

AIR FORCE DELIVERS THE GOODS LONELY PACIFIC OUTPOST Indicative of the spirit of comradeship existing between New Zealanders in the various branches of the armed services was a Christmas gesture made by the Royal New Zealand Air Force in arranging for the delivery of mail and fresh meat and vegetiibles to an isolated garrison “somewhere in the South Pacific.” Two aircraft of the Royal New Zealand Air Force took off on Christmas Day to play the part of sleighs for Father Christmas. Stored on board were sufficient provisions to enable a real New Zealand Christmas dinner for the garrison. Almost half a ton of lamb and more than a ton of potatoes were included, and in order that there should not be any wastage in storage space or carrying capacity the green peas, without which a Christmas dinner would be incomplete, were shelled ready for coking. Approximately a quarter of a ton of these were delivered. Roaring in at a low altitude, the two aircraft were a welcome sight to the garrison in this lonelv outpost, and a cheer went up as parachutes were seen to fall with the precious cargo attached. When the garrison opened the packages they found not only a truly grand New Zealand Christmas dinner, but. more important than that. th«Mr Christmas mail.
