SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. W. O. D. Ry all, Wanganui, was a recent visitor to Wellington. Mrs. H. L. Dustin, Welson Street, leaves to-day for Gisborne to spend Christmas with her, daughter, Mrs. S. W. Bruce. Mrs. T. Latham, Hadfield House. Collegiate School, leaves to-day for the South Island to spend the holidays at Little River, Canterbury. Miss M. E. Baker, principal of the Girls’ College, will journey to Timaru to-day by ’plane. Sixty-three parcels were packed at the Wanganui Air Force Relations depot yesterday and will be sent to Wanganui airmen serving overseas. HITHER AND THITHER W.W.S.A. Military Unit As a. wind-up to the year’s activi* lies the military drill section of the W.W.S.A. will hold a social evening in the Lyric Hall to-night. Members of ihe Red Cross Society, W.A.A.C., St. John Ambulance, as well as members of the V W.W.S.A., are invited to be present. Gonville Red Cross Sub-Centre On Monday night the final meeting of the Voluntary Aid Detachment took the form of a social and was held in the Gonville Town Hall. Music, games and competitions were enjoyed. Miss Mary Richdale contributed a pianoforte solo and songs were sung by Mrs. Lockett and Mrs. Richdale. Mrs. Mew was the accompanist. Mrs. R. R. Dawson, president, presented sprays to Mrs. Prince (lady superintendent), Mrs. Barrow (aommandant), and to Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Mitchell (section leaders), and expressed her thanks for all they had done during the year. Supper was served and a happy gathering ended with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Red Cross Social Afternoon On Monday afternoon the final meeting for the year was held by the Gonville Red Cross Sub-centre in St. Peter's Hall. Vocal solos were sung by Mrs. A. Lockett, with Mrs. Mew as accompanist. Competitions were won by Mrs. Whitcombe and Mrs. H. Strauchon. The vice-president, Mrs. A. J. Fisher, presented bouquets to Mrs. R. R. Dawson (president), Mr-. W. Walton (treasurer), and Mrs. D. G. Strachan (secretary). Mrs. Dawson thanked all for their help during the year and wished them a happy Christmas and New Year. Since March, the following articles have been made and sent in hospital boxes for Gonville E.P.S. station, or returned to headquarters: 6 dressing gowns, 36 pairs pyjamas, 105 bedjackets, 10 body belts, 36 face cloths. 131 b.p. covers, 80 u. covers, 2 wool quilts, 11 pairs bed socks, 6 dusters, 3 tray cloths, 57 handkerchiefs, 29 towels, 20 assorted bandages, 60 triangle bandages, 9 many tailed bandages, 19 knitted pullovers, 112 pairs sox, also gloves, scarves and balaclavas. College Pupils Patriotic Work The 53rd. annual report of the Wanganui Girls’ College, presented at the annual nrize-giving ceremony, referred to the patriotic work and school societies. Members of the Christian Student Movement, at their annual concert, raised £8 10s for general funds and 30s for leper work. The Young Helpers’ League, with boxes and Christmas tree collections, raised the sum of £l5 6s 3d, an increase of £8 on last year’s sum. They hiked for rose-hips, collecting sufficient to keep Karitane in jelly for some considerable time. They despatched 150 bottle tops, 35 jug covers, 2 large peggy square quilts, socks, bed socks, pullovers, waistcoats, 100 dresses and a large collection of toy animals of every description. Lattey-Williams Cup Competition Sections of the Wanganui Subcentre of the Red Cross Society comI peted on Monday night in an interi section competition for the LatteyWilliams Cup. This is the first time the cup has been competed for, and teams were examined in oral tests, bedmaking, bandaging, sponging, and uniforms. Seven teams competed and the examiners were Mesdames C. Beattie, L. F. Row, G. Jones, and Miss A. Wells. Four teams were entered by the commandant of No. 1 detachment, Miss N. Elliot, and the leaders were Mesdames E. M. Currin. S. Barton. D. Williams, and Miss K. Bruce. The commandant of the second detachment, Mrs. L. Ha/.;, entered three teams and the leaders were Misses J. Anderson, B. Clements, and Betty Craig. The competition was held in the sub-centre rooms. Members of the winning team were Mesdames Williams (leader), A. Cricks, E. Mitchell, and Misses I. Brown, G. Adams and L. Robb. The second team, only three points behind, was Mesdames S. Barion (leader), N. Moore, R. Davidson, E. Watt, E. Templeton, and Miss J. Turnbull.
