SEQUEL TO RECENT FLOODS

WAITOTARA COUNTY DAMAGE It was decided at the monthly meeting of the Waitotara County Council yesterday to take no action regarding having the work performed bycounty councils “essential” for the purpose of the National Service Emergency Regulations. The engineer, Mr. T. Dix, reported that considerable flood damage had occurred along the Waitotara Valley highway, traffic being stopped three times. A bulldozer was used to shift large slips which were of a sloppy nature, and the damage has been rectified, stated the report. Damage has been caused to the Rangitatau East Watershed highway between mile pegs two and three, by the adjacent stream overflowing its banks and gauging channels in the roadway. Many small slips have occurred along the highway which have been cleared. Sealing operations are expected to be started along the Maxwell Station Road in a few days. The Bushy Park, Ngarino, and Maxwell Station Roads were graded. Along the Rangitatau West Road, scrub was cut and tables were cleaned. The lessee of the Nukumaru Recreation Reserve has planted 10 acres of the reserve with marram grass. In the Brunswick-Westmere Riding only slight damage was done to riding roads during recent storms. Slips were removed along the river bank and the Tokomaru East and West Roads. The Springvale-Francis and Heads-Mosston and Blueskin highways and the Brunswick, Symes. Smith, Kaikokopu, Watt, and Livingstone Roads were graded. The Blueskin highway, Kai Iwi Valley, Brunswick. Western Line, and Kaikokopu Roads were metal patched. Drains were cleaned along the SpringvaleFrancis highway, and a surface culvert was placed across the Riverbank Road at Shield's. The Kauarapaoa Road was closed for a short period because of slips ui Raorikia. In the Mosston Riding roads were graded. Those present at the meeting were Crs. W. Morrison (chairman), R. Far-
