“CHARITY” AND “DOLE”

CRITICISM OF AUSTRALIAN DAIRY SUBSIDY Canberra, Oct. 10. Australian dairymen have criticised the £2,000,000 annual subsidy provided in the Dairying Assistance Bill which has been passed without amendment by both Houses, despite Opposition criticism. At a special meeting in New South Wales, speakers described the subsidy as “charity” and a “dole.” The meeting asked for an increase of sixpence a pound for butter to producers to give them ‘an Australian standard of living.” In the Senate the Customs Minister, Mr. Keane, said the subsidy might mean an increase of 10s a week to dairy farmers. It will give producers lid a lb. more for butter. Up to the present the return to butter producers has been about Is lad per lb. There are stated to be 64,000 dairy farmers in Australia, so the subsidy means an average additional payment to the farmers of about £3O a year.
