SERIES OF THEFTS

PETROL AND CIGARETTES LOSSES AT INVERCARGILL (P.A.) Invercargill, Sept. 28. A series of thefts occurred in Invercargill during the week-end, when over £lOO worth of cigarettes and 98 gallons of petrol were stolen. The first to be discovered was the theft of 58 gallons of petrol from a bowser in the Southland Carrying Company premises in Spey Street. When an employee of the company visited the premises yesterday morning he found an entrance had been made by the back door and o.her doors in the building had also been forced. A steel lock on the bowser haa been presumably cut through with a set of bolt cutters, which are now missing. Apparently the thief or thieves used one of the company’s trucks to move the petrol and then put the truck back. Fourteen gallons of petrol and 20 ot power kerosene were also stolen from a shed adjoining the Queen’s Park Golf Club house. It is thought that a truck was also used here. The Single Profit Depot in Leven Street was broken into and over £lOO worth of cigarettes and tobacco were taken. Entrance was gained by ripping off boards at the rear of the building and then cutting a tin lining.
