WATERSIDER FINED
THEFT OF CIGARETTES •(P.A.) Auckland, Sept. 29. The theft of eight packets of cigarettes, valued at 4s, from an American ship was admitted in the Police Court by Albert Oliver Dufty, aged 34, watersider. The police said a sailor on guard, saw Dufty acting suspiciously and j found the cigarettes concealed in his socks. At least 22 cartons of cigarettes has been broached on this ship, stated the police. Defending counsel said Dufty had, ;found eight packets on a raft and sue- i cumbed to temptation. He would be ; excluded from the wharf for a long I .period. He was married, with three i children, and previously had an un- 1 blemished reputation. “We all know cargo brought from: overseas comes in peril, and there-, fore the theft of cargo is a grave mat- i ter,” Mr. J. Morling, S.M. “It is sad . to find a family man like Dufty. with . a good reputation, coming before ths i Court. After much hesitation I have | decided not to send him to gaol. Ap- • parently the theft was not contemplated.” Dufty was fined £lO.
