BETTING IN NEW YORK

LA GUARDIA WANTS TO AMEND LEGISLATION (Recd. 9.45 p.m.) New York, Sept. 27. The Mayor of New York, Mr. Fiorello la Guardia, in a broadcast, said he was seeking to amend legislation to permit the recovery of all losses from gambling in any 'amount and of any nature, kind or description. He pointed out that a State law permits the loser to sue for recovery from a professional gambler only if 25 dollars or more is list at one sitting. He intends to seek an amendment to the law so that even a tencent “policy” wager is recoverable. (“Policy” gambling, which is popular with small gamblers, is a form of lottery based on totalisator returns or other groups of figures). La Guardia invited families who have lost bets in the last three months to sue the bookmaker. He promised legal assistance if the amount was too small for a lawyer to take the case.
