WANGANUI RIVER ROAD
EXPECTED TO BE OPEN LAST NIGHT Good progress has been made with :he task of clearing slips on the Wanganui River Road to Pipiriki, and it ■•vas expected that the road would be open again last night. Heavy rain in the back country on Wednesday and Thursday caused trouble on the roads and much flooding, with the result that Pipiriki was temporarily isolated. A service car which left Wanganui ’ast Wednesday was blocked by slips between Jerusalem and Pipiriki, and another car was held up at Pipiriki. This meant that Wanganui River Services, Ltd., had no cars available for their passenger services to and from Wanganui. Last Friday the position was eased to a certain extent when a river-boat made a special trip with passengers and freight for Wanganui, returning to Pipiriki next day. Yesterday this vessel, which is stationed at Pipiriki, transported freight as far down the river as Mokonui, 38 miles from Wanganui, where road transport was available. The trouble occurred between Mokonui and Pipiriki, but a spell of fine weather has enabled men engaged in the work of clearing the road to proceed without interruption.
