MAY BE AXIS PROPAGANDA
STC.RY OF JAP NAVAL UNITS IN ATLANTIC Rugby, Sept. 25. An enemy announcement that Japanese naval units have joined forces with German warships in the Atlantic is regarded in London naval circles as political propaganda. It is pointed out that a submarine with a particularly valuable cargo or personnel might make the long journey from Singapore or Java if the Japanese had naval units to spare for such a purpose, but it would be done only in most exceptional circumstances. There was no actual knowledge of any such operation having taken place. Tokio official radio announced that Japanese naval forces were now operating in lhe Atlantic in close cooperation with the Axis navies, and the German High Command issued a statement declaring that German naval forces had been co-operating with the Japanese in the Indian Ocean since Japan’s entry into the war. The appearance of Japanese submarines had effected co-operation in the Atlantic for the first time.—B.O.W.
