GERMANY HONOURS V.C. WINNER

Lieut.-Commander A. H. Beattie, V.C., hero of the recent St. Nazaire raid, was saluted by the German commandant of a German prison camp at a special parade, at which the full citation of his award was read out to the British prisoners. Beattie was in command of H.M.S. Campelltown, the destroyer which I rammed the dock gates and was blown ■ up to destroy them. The commandant joined in the cheers of Beattie's fellow-prisoners. A prisoner of war, in a letter home, says: “We had a very exciting ceremony. A special camp parade was ordered, and the little commandant, in full regalia, called Beattie out and read the official news of the award of the Victoria Cross. He saluted him, which was gentlemanly. “Naturally there was wild applause. We all feel the raid must have been thought worthwhile at home.”
