TAIHAPE RETAILERS’ ASSN.
ANNUAL MEETING. There was a large attendance at the annual meeting of the Taihape Retaillers’ Association held on Tuesday evening. The president, Mr. H. M. McCallum, invited discussion on a motion to close shops at 8 p.m. on Saturday nights instead of 9 p.m., as at present. After lengthy discussion the motion was defeated* only seven members being in favour of earlier closing. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £35 4s Id, and receipts for the year were £26 10s 2d, the chief item being subscriptions £25 14s 6d. Total expenditure for the year was £8 0s sd. There was a balance of income over expenditure, of £lB 9s 9d. The secretary was voted an honorarium of £l2* 12s in recognition of his valuable work. The following officers were dulyelected: President, H. M. McCallum; Executive Committee. Messrs. F. Read, H. Johnston, F. White, F. McSweeney, Naylor, Annear, Gordon, Swedlund, Pettigrew, Miss Wood, Mes-, dames Fitzsimmons and Little; secretary, Mr. K. Mellso'p; auditor, Mr. F. Reece. The postmaster, Mr. Landrum, in addressing the meeting, said he was unable to say that a new post office was to be built, but announced that a contract would start this week for two after-hour toll cabinets at the rear of the office, which would be a great improvement. This would include a small waiting-room so that people could keep out of the rain. E.P.S. MEETING. The Mayor, Mr. E. Loader, presided over the monthly meeting of the E.P.S. committee. Authority was given to the secretary to notify all members of the various* units of the E.P.S. that service was now compulsory and to issue each man with an arm band and identification card. The Transport Controller was instructed to see that vehicles used were suitable for using the standard type stretcher. It was decided to approach Mr. Hill to act as chief warden. It was stressed that the lifting of the lighting restrictions applied only to street lighting.
