MARTON NOTES

MARTON SOLDIERS OVERSEAS LETTER FROM MIDDLE EAST In an interesting letter from the Middle East, Corporal R. H. Turnbull, superintendent of the Marton Division of St. John Ambulance, mentions that he has seen the following Martonians: Bill Davies, J. Duncan, Doug. McEwen. Wally Clark, V. Smith, Les Campbell and Colin Brant, and also Ella Watts. “We had several chats about times in St. John Ambulance," he writes. “You can imagine how much I like Cairo when I tell you that I have not been in for over four months, and a very up-To-date Diesel train within two minutes’ walk. With two others I have been appointed unit historians to write the history. I was doing the history and the other twb the sports and photography, but unfortunately we have had to leave it in the meantime owing to pressure of work. I covered the earlier days up to our arrival here. Some day it may be finished. I was very proud to read about the ambulance trailer and the wonderful help that the president had given in his usual ouiet way. Some day I hope once more to see the plac? I always look upon as my home town, Marton, and meet all the friends I was so happy with. “I am still in the Q.M. stores and like my job. Plenty of work these days. Social life to the ordinary soldier just doesn’t exist unless one drinks hard. There is realy nothing else to do. It is so different from England," concludes Corporal Turnbull.
