FALSE SALES TAX RETURNS

CABINETMAKER FINED AT AUCKLAND (P.A.) Auckland. Sept. 25. Fines totalling £3OO were imposed when Harold Charles Nason, cabinetmaker, of Devonport, pleaded guilty to three charges of having made false sales tax returns with intent to defraud the revenue, before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M. The charges were brought by the Collector of Customs. Defendant had not benefited himself in any way by making the false returns and he had sold his goods more cheaply to purchasers, said his counsel. His trouble was that he was no businessman and a muddler with his books. A fine of £lOO on each charge was imposed.
