OBITUARY

HON. J. GOODALL, M.L.C. The death occurred suddenly on Tuesday evening of the Hon. James Goodall, M.L.C., says a Press Association telegram from Greymouth. Mr. Goodall, who was born at Nelson in 1862, was associated with unionism on the West Coast for half a century, and also took part in public life in various capacities. He took a leading part in the formation of the Greymouth Waterside Workers’ Union, being the: first president. He was among those victimised over the 1890 strike, but after three years he regained waterside work and aided in the restoration of unionism, becoming vice-president, then president, and finally secretary, till 1913, when the big strike resulted in a breakaway and the formaton of a new union, and Mr. Goodall was again among those obliged to look elsewhere for employment. He was chosen as secretary for the Westland Engine Drivers’ Union, also the Shop Assistants’. Hotel, and Restaurant Workers’ Union. For a quarter of a century he was secretary of the Greymouth Labour Representation Committee. He had a long record of local body service, and for many years as assessor on conciliation councils. He was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1936. MR. W. G. WHITEMAN. The death occurred at Masterton, of Mr. William George Whiteman, at the age of 66 years. The late Mr. Whiteman was born at Upper Hutt, and went to the Wairarapa district when still young. He entered the sawmilling business, and had continued in the industry throughout his life. He was a keen footballer, having gained representative honours on several occasions, a keen cricketer, and at one 1 time owned several successful raceI horses.
