BREATH OF WINTER

SNOW AT WELLINGTON (P.A.) Wellington, Sept. 11. Wellington experienced the cold breath of winter to-day just when the mild weather of the past few week.', had encouraged feeling that spring was close at hand. The day dawned brilliantly but soon after 9 o’clock clouds began to spread over the city from the south and. by 9.30 hail had begun to fall heavily The hills around the city soon took on a mantle of white. About 10.30 a.m. the thermometer fell sharply to 33.8 degrees Fahrenheit and the fail turned to snow. The fall was not. of long duration and the snow swiftly melted on the ground. Temperatures fluctuated between 40 and 44 degrees all day, except for the fall at 10.39 a.m. SNOW IN CANTERBURY SPRING LAMBS WILL SUFFER. (P.AJ Christchurch, Sept. 11. Widespread falls of rain, hail, and snow were experienced throughout Canterbury during the night and although the fall generally has not been heavy it was accompanied by a bitingly cold south-westerly wind. Reports received from the country indicate that fsirly heavy losses will be experienced with spring lambs, as the lambing season on the plains is now at its height. This morning Christchurch was under a thin blanket of white. On the Cashmere Hills it was necessary to run a snow plough before the trams could operate, but following this no difficulty was experienced.
