SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. Gordon McLeod, of Sanson, visited Wanganui during the week. Mrs. J. G. Denniston has returned to Wanganui after a holiday spent at Rotorua. Mrs. C. N. Slight returned to Palmerston on Thursday after staying with her parents in Raetihi. Mrs. E. Strachan, Taihape, has been visiting Wanganui. Mrs. lan Kitt has returned to Wanganui East from Wellington. Mrs. J. A. Harris, Turakina, president of the Wellington central provincial conjmittee of the W.D.F.U., was among recent guests at the W.D. Rest Home, Awapuni. Miss D. Soebcrg, who has resigned from the position of hon. secretary of the Wanganui Women’s War Service Auxiliary, was entertained at an afternoon tea party at the D.I.C. yesterday. Eulogistic reference was made to the work done by Miss Soeberg and she was presented with a bouquet and gift of dainty china from I he executive, and a floral spray from the clerical staff. The death has occurred of Mis. Barbara Mary Greig, aged 82 years, of Remuera, Auckland. Born at Talbot, Victoria, Australia, Mrs. Greig married the late Mr. James Dickson Greig, who was for many years manager of branches of the Bank of Australasia in Australia, Wanganui and Auckland. She was an active worker for the Red Cross Society up to the time of her death, and is survived ny three daughters and six grandchildren. The death of Mrs. William McConnochie, which occurred last week at | her residence. St. Ki Ida, recalls the early days in Central Otago. Mrs. | McConnochie, who was 84 years oi | age, arrived at Port Chalmers by the j Dover Castle in 1873, and married j Mr. William McConnochie, of St. Bathans, in 1882. At that time St. Bathans was a thriving township, a.: gold was being produced in plenty from the Kildare Hill and other wellknown claims, and miners were attracted to the locality from all parts of the world, including about 40 miners from the Sacramento diggings of California. She was predeceased by her husband in 1928, and is survived by a family of three. HITHER AND THITHER The Red Cross funds have benefited to the extent of £2 15s 9d because ol the patriotic spirit of a small group of children. The young folk organised a concert and contributed items for the effort which was held in the Y.M.-Y.W.C.A. Lounge on Wednesday afternoon. The children responsible for the effort were Louise and Shirley King, Joan Lambert, Sylvia Mathie. Heather and Jean Mallett, Rae Walker, Margaret Morgan. Dale, Jill and Colleen Dewson, Joan Healey. Pam Fairweather. Joyce. Ngaire, Jean, Betty and Ron Walford. Wanganui East Temperance Work. The Wanganui East Women’s Christian Temperance Union held their monthly meeting recently in bt. Alban’s Hall. Mrs. Hoare led the devotions. The pledge was reaffirmed. The Temperance Fact was read by Mrs. Scott. Members observed a two minutes’ silence in memory of three late members —Mrs. Carter, Mrs. Hopkirk and Mrs. Hussey. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Horsley and Conybeer. The president closed the meeting with the Benediction. “Sutcliffe School of Radiant Living” Miss S. Ashmore, A.T.R.L., and Mrs. R. Garrett, A.T.R.L., fully exercised their talent lor lecturing at. this week’s meeting of the Sutcliffe School of Radiant Living. The two lectures, titled “Watch Your Defensive” (.spiritual) and “idle Words” (on the power of the spoken word) were very educative and illuminating. Mrs. Dorothy Sutherland read the weekly letter from the Dr. Sutcline. Mrs. Holmes conducted “My Purpose,” ana the singing was under the baton oi Mr. Stan Newsome. In the chair was the president, Mr. E. R. Prince, A.T.R.L., who related his recent visit to the Auckland and Hamilton schools. Effort For Durie Hill Red Cross A most enjoyable evening was spent at the home ot Mr. and Mrs. W. j. Deem, Durie Hill, by a number oi Iriencis when they were entertained by the host ana hostess and their three small grand-daughters, Marie and Elaine Rapson and Phillippa Deem. Tne parly took the form oi a children’s concert, this being the small girls’ war effort lor Rea Cross funds. The programme comprised songs, recitations, a snort, play, dumo charades ana an Irish jig, all rendered in merry mood by each little performer. Tnere was loud applause when the collection box revealed tne sum of £1 lus, which amount was handed over io the Durie Hill Red Cross Suo-centre Fund. The president, on behalf of the centre, thanked the children tor their splendid effort and each was presented with a box ot sweets. Turakina Women’s Institute Mrs. R. J. Glasgow presided over a fair attendance oi members al the May meeting of the Turakina Women’s Institute, held in St. Andrew’s Hall on the 19th. inst. Members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy with those recently bereaved. Mrs. Major gave the mono, “Live and Let Live," and the roll call, “A cure for a cold” brought form many and varied replies. Mrs. C. Perry gave a most interesting talk on “Home Nursing" and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks by acclamation, 'the June competitions will be: Best bloom and half a dozen biscuits. Hostesses: Mrs and Miss Johnston and Mrs. Jones. Results of the competitions were: Best bloom, Mrs. Major 1 and 3, Mrs. R. J. Glasgow 2; nut loaf, Mrs. Major 1, Mrs. R. J. Glasgow 2. Afternoon tea, served by the hostesses, brought a pleasant afternoon to a close. KAITOKE W.l. There was a fair attendance al the May meeting of. the Kartoke W.l. which was hold in the Kaitoke Hall. Mrs. Bonner presided. Sick members were wished a very speedy recovery. The motto was read by Mrs. Owles. Mrs. Anderson will provide the motto for next month. The monthly soldier’s parcel goes to Mrs. Polkinghorne'. brother. Members are asked to bring their own sugar for afternoon tea each month. The competition results were: Pickles, Mrs. H. Garner and Mrs. Service 1; ironed duchess set, Mrs. Walker 1, Miss Scott 2, Miss Pritchard 3; floral, Mrs. Hunt, Mrs. McKernon 2, Mrs. H. Garner 3 Hostesses for next month are Mrs. N. Lynch, Mrs. Campbell, and Miss Aitken.
