EARLY VICTORY

SOONER THAN EXPECTED CORDELL HULL SEES GROUND FOR HOPE (By Telegraph—Pres® Association—Copyright■ Washington, May 20. The Secretary of State. Mr. Cordell Hull, at a Press conference today, indicated that he saw some grounds for hope that victory would come sooner than previously had been expected. Asked whether developments in recent weeks on the home and foreign fronts encouraged belief in earlier victory, Mr. Hull pointed out that tne powers and facilities of the United States were developing on a more and more massive scale, not only for offensive and defensive operations, but for outright offensive war. It was only natural that calculations as to the .duration of the war should be made m the light of those facts. Mr. Hull said that the immobilising of the French warships at Martinoue was still going on, but the removal of fuel had been completed. “DAMNED COCKY!" (Rccd. 7.5 p.m.) New Y May 20. Lieut. James Doolittle, junr., a flier son of the army hero who led the raid bombing Tokio, said enthusiastically: “I feel damned cocky about my old man,” and added: “They could not have picked a better man for the job.”
