RAETIHI WOMEN'S INSTITUTE | The Raetihi Women’s Institute held > its general meeting on inursaay, May I 7, and also celebrated its eigiitn oirtn- j day. Also 1 to Mrs. Fletcher, convener of the 5 Singing Circfe, and Mrs. Wilson, of the . Drama Circle. The retiring president, . Mrs. Ward, was the recipient oi a silJ ver spoon embossed with the institute’s 1 monogram, as a token of appreciation > from the members. In replying, Mrs. > Ward presented members of the com- . mittee with shoulder sprays. The . usual birthday cake was made up into . ten cakes to be sent to the soldiers by one of the members. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses and a very enjoyable afternoon was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. At the next monthly meeting a demonstration of glove making will be given. Competitions will be cooking (date loaf), and thrift (article from flour bag). WESTBOURNE WOMEN'S i INSTITUTE. L The monthly meeting of the Westbourne Women's Institute was held on Tuesday last. Mrs. F. H. Uttley presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of “God Defend New Zealand.” followed by the aspiration and motions of sympathy. Mrs. J. Gould, newlyelected president of the Wanganui District Federation, was welcomed by the president and presented with a shoulder spray. The minutes were read by Miss Revell and the financial statement by Mrs. Simmons. The roll call was "A Sugar Hint” and the motto “A faith-' full friend is a sound defence and he I that has found such one has found a treasure. A faithful friend is the spice of life.” An appeal was made for reading matter for the soldiers at Castlecliff, also one for old clothing to be remade into children's clothes. The War Welfare League is doing good work and has made first aid tins for the Home Guard. Two pounds oi wool for patriotic knitting were distributed to members. During the social hour Mrs. Hodges delighted with two songs. Her aceompaniste was Miss Sawyers. Mrs. Williams, late of Port Moresby, gave a very interesting talk on her evacuation from Port Moresby to New Zealand. A very vivid picture was painted of the many trials that the evacuees went through. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the entertainers and they were presented with shoulder sprays. Competitions were won by Mrs. J. Gould, junr., for the quilted slipper and Mrs. Bergin for the best chrysanthemum. The first birthday of the institute is in June and Mrs. Bergin was thanked for an offer to donate the birthday cake. After an enjoyable afternoon tea the meeting closed with the singing of “God Save the King.” DUNEDIN RABBITSKIN SALE. Dunedin, May 19.
