COAL IN AUSTRALIA
MR. CURTIN APPALLED TOO MANY STOPPAGES Canberra, May 19. A recrudescence of coal mine stoppages led to a further statement by Mr. J. Curtin in the House of Representatives to-day. The Prime Minister attacked both the mine owners and the miners “for not subordinating their private interests to the welfare of the nation.” Declaring that. it was the owners' business ot assist the Government in overcoming the irritations leading to stoppages, he nevertheless said he was appalled at some ot the reasons advanced for the disputes on the coalfields. “I know enough about this business to understand that this is not a one-side state of affairs,” he said. “It never has been, Yet I am satisfied that what is going on in the coalfields to has not the ordinary explanation of industrial disputes." Mr. Curtin added that he was taking the unusual course of personally investigating Ihe cause of coal disputes. He was consulting the miners’ representatives to-day and would hear the owners' side of the ease to-morrow.
