LABOUR PARTY ACTIVITIES (0.C.) Raetihi, May 19. A representative meeting of the Raetihi branch of the New Zealand Labour Party met at Cunningham’s Hall on Tuesday evening last. It was resolved to alter the monthly meeting, which in future will be held on the second Tuesday evening of each month, to permit farmer members to attend. Questions were discussed affecting the war effort and plans were laid to meet any eventualities. Interesting discussions are set down for future meetings on the problems affecting the war and the peace to follow. SEVERE GALE On Friday night last Raetihi and district were swept by one of the most severe gales experienced since 1918. The gale was of cyclonic force and in some instances chimneys were razed to the ground and parts of wooden structures were demolished. Sheets of iron were blown off roofs and carried into neighbouring paddocks. Power lines and telephonic communications were affected by the gale, and the night was an anxious, one for residents, many of whom had a sleepless night. DEATH OF MRS. ANNIE ROSE Mrs. Annie Rose died on Friday, .May 8. at the age of 72 years, at the residence of Mr. Gilbert Wise. She was the wife of Mr. George Rose. Mi. and Mrs. Rose had been married 52 years and came to Raetihi in 1908, walking over from Rangataua with their young family. They first lived in a house on the site of the present tennis courts. Their house was destroyed by the bush fires of 1918. Mrs. Rose and her husband and family and Mr. David Underwood wer? the original members of the local branch of the Salvation Army, of which denomination they had been staunch members ever since—a period of upwards of 30 years. There are four children —Mesdames Olive Bergman, Lily Mosen and Ivy Wise, and Mr. ['Arthur Rose—to whom. together i with Mr. Rose, the sincerest sympathy of the townspeople is extended.
