RANGITIKEI NAVY LEAGUE

YEAR’S ACTIVITIES IN REVIEW The following interesting report was read at Ihe annual meet'ng of the Rangitikei sub-branch of ‘.he i\avy League on Saturday evening:— “At March 31, 1942 our membersnip was composed of 2 ILe fellows. 1 annual fellow. 420 associate members, and 245 junior members—an increase of associate members of 117. “During the year St. Stephen’s School earned a flag for 100 per cent, membership. Marton DissLci. High Scl.oo! still has over 190 memb?rc and has be' n awarded a pennant to their flag. Huntley School has also been awarded a pennant to their flag. This school has a remarkable record, having had 100 per eent. membership of both teaching staff and pupils for many years. Flags and pennants come from the Wellington branch. ‘We have lo report with regret the death of two of our oldest memo ns, [Mrs. A. Cox and Mrs. H. H. Richardson. “The activities of the branch have been the same as last year, but on an increased scale. “Parcels of comforts have been sent to Rangitikei sailors, and to H.M.S. Philomel, for distribution amongst the ships of the Royal NewZealand Navy. Hand-knitted woollen garments have been sent, to the Wellington brancn for despatch to Navy League Headquarters in London for distribution to the ships of the fleets er.d Merchant Navy. We have also sent a donation of £5O to the Sea Cadets’ Fund. We ask for the lively attention and interest of everyone in this vital work of the Navy League, which has only just begun in New Zealand. ‘ The actual number of handknitted garments sent from Rangillkei is as follows:—2l2 pullovers and jerseys, 2 cardigans, 246 scarves, 2 caps. 2 pairs of mine-sweeper gloves, 133 pairs of mittens, 37 pairs of gloves. 5 shirts, 2 pairs of wristle s, ill balaclavas. 275 pairs of socks, and 79 pairs of sea-boot stockings. In addition to these, 745 pairs of seeks and 348 seamen’s jerseys have been bought and sent to Wellington—a grand total of 2199 garments. This does not include the woollen outfit of pullover, etc., supplied to each Rangitikei boy when he joins up. I “Since last year it is interesting to ' note that there has been a change in the '.vpe cl garment knitted. There are fewer mittens and balaclavas and garments of the mosquito type, and a large increase in pullovers, jerseys and sca-ooot stockings, which knitters may be justified in regarding as in the battleship class. “In the comforts parcels we have sent many books and gramophone records, chocolates, etc., and a notable number of fruit cakes -988 as against 576 last year. Grateful letters indicate that these cakes have been a great success. “Your committee wishes to express its appreciation of the work done by all helpers in the work of the Navy League, and gratitude to those who have contributed money. “We acknowledge with pride and pleasure a present from the ship’s company of H.M.S. Achilles—a photograph of the ship, accompanied by a letter from the commander expressing appreciation of our work.’’ Statement of Accounts.
