oCITY COUNCIL MEETING PROV ISION OF AIR-RAID SHELTERS Permission to attach a plaque to the memorial gate in memory of the late Mrs. W. M. Falconer on the crol quel courts, Victoria Park, was granted at yesterday's meeting of the Wanganui City Council. Those present al the meeting were the Mayor, Hon. W. J. Rogers, M.L.C., Crs. J. J. Scott, E. W. Merewether, R. P. Andrews. S. J. Harris, G. P. Hawkins. T. S. Russell, A. W. Scoullar. W. Searle, J. F. Broad, and G. E. Bennett. Crs. Jones and Silk were granted leave of absence. The Works Committee reported that consideration had been given to the matter of serving requisitions on the owners of business premises requiring them to provide air-raid shelters. A recommendation was submitted that the Deputy-Mayor, Mr. J. J. Scott, the chairman of the Works Committee, Mr. G. P. Hawkins, and the acting-city engineer, Mr. W. J. Frethey. be authorised to issue such requisitions where deemed necessary in accordance with the regulations, these to exclude the central business areas of the city for which provision has been made. It was reported that the medical controller of the Emergency Precautions Services, Dr. A. Wilson, lias requested that a room at the Wanganui East Town Hall be specially equipped lor use as an operating theatre. The estimated cost of the proposed work is from £3O to £4O, and the expenditure would be subject to Government subsidy. The matter of giving effect to the requisition has been left to the acting-city engineer, Mr. W. J. Frethey.
