CONCESSIONS IN WAGES

AGREEMENT BY WORKERS IN U.S.A. (Recd. 11.30 p.m.) New York, May 18 Representatives of American shipyard workers agreed to relinquish an estimated hundred million dollars in wage increases in the first major demonstration of Labour’s acquiescence of Mr. Roosevelt’s anti-in-flation programme. The wage stabilisation agreement was reached after three weeks’ negotiations between Labour, management and Government officials. It provides for wage increases of 8 per cent., totalling 125,000,000 dollars instead of 225,000,000 dollars to which the existing contracts entitled the workers. The wage increases will be invested in War Savings Bonds, which will not be cashed except in cases of extreme emergency. The agreement also eliminates double pay for Saturday and Sunday work but retains the five-day 40-hour working week.
