MEXICAN VESSEL

TORPEDOED BY U-BOAT STRONG PROTEST LODGED (Reed. 9.15 p.m.) Washington, May 15. The Navy Department announced that the Mexican merchantman Portrero Deiano, fully illuminated and also showing a brightly-lighted Mexican flag, was torpedoed and sunk. Thirteen of the crew, including the captain and all officers, are dead. Twenty-five other members of the crew were rescued. Survivors told reporters that the U-boat stalked the ship for half a.u hour and then deliberately landed a torpedo in the centre of the flag. A Mexico City message states that the Foreign Minister, Senor Padiiia, announced that a strong protest of the Portrero Delano was despatched to the Axis Powers. He added: "Mexico will take up the position later unless reparations are forthcoming from Germany within a certain time." It is the first Mexican ship lost through U-boat action since the war
