THE TURF

. FOR EGMONT RACES awapunFcandidates Awapuni stables are well represented at the Egmont meeting to-morrow and the feature item at Awapuni on I Tuesday was a polished display of fast I jumping by Chat who went twice I round over the steeplechase fences. | She was ridden by M. Wright and Segra, ridden by E. Temperton, went i with her for nearly a mile. The going was heavy but it made no differi 'nee to Chat, who gave a faultless dis- , day over ten fences. In her engage- : nents this season she will be ridden i by A. E. Lord. ' Foxiana (D. W! Redstone) was another to jump the brush fences and the boards, and he had an un-named gelding ridden by Miss Freda White, as a companion. Foxiana went well but his mate, who shaped promisingly until he tired, tipped out at the boards after having gone about a mile and a-half. A number of horses were over the schooling hurdles, among them being Half Caste (.Temperaton) and Colossai Chief (C. A. Bowry), who were cleai of Kena (A. Midwood) and Renascoi (R. Smith> after a line effort over 12 furlongs with four hurdles. Hunting Lore (Redstone) also went particularly well, his task being twice round with six fences. Kanui te Pai looks to be in good order for Egmont. He was ridden by W. J. Broughton over six in company with Moderate and he was going very easily at the finish. The time was .slow but the flags were over 50 feet out. Auburn Lad and Etruscan sprinted four in 59 3-5, and Aurora’s Star and Kinsman were a shade faster in a similar task. Later Augment and Tetratina cut four out in 58, which was good. Old Bill (Broughton) moved nicely in a mile gallop and he wa s not required to do better than even time though he hit out confidently. Riding Engagements. Riding engagements for Egmont have been announced as under:— W. J. Broughton: Lambourn, Vin d’Honneur, Black Robe, Hinkler, Darag. C. A. Bowry: Colossal Chief, Chief Lord, Desert Tide. A. G. Waddell: Babrow, Radiant Vaals, Tau-Uru. E. Temperton: Colibri, Segra. A. E. Lord: Chat. A. Midwood: Half Caste, Augment. V. Sellars: Moderate, Minority, Nuna, Hamish. An earlier start than usual will be made to-morrow, the first race being set down for 11.30 a.m.. instead oi 11.45 a.m. as in former years. The 8.20 a.m. train from Wanganui arrives in time for the first race. WINNER BY CORONACH BEST HORSE IN EUROPE Although Coronach, whose gift to the Dominion's bloodstock industry was a wonderful gesture on the part, of his owner, Mrs. Macdonald Buchanan, failed to sire a classic winner in the land of his birth, the son of Hurry On is the sire of the best horse on the Continent of Europe. This is the four-year-old Italian-bred Niccolo del Arco. The fact that his Derby and St. Leger winning sire. Coronach, is in New Zealand is being widely publicised as a result of the deeds of the Italian horse, who is an exceptional performer. He ranks as a half-brother to the great Italian horse Nearco, who was unbeaten and was purchased for the stud at £60,000 by Mr. Martin Benson, an Englishman. New Zealand has an interest also in the dam of Nearco and Niccolo del Arco, as the dam, Nogara, is a grand-daughter of Carbine's son, Spearmint. The son of Coronach was, like Nearco. invincible as a three-year-old, and after winning the Italian Derby and all other classic races for horses of his age, he defeated the champion four-year-old. Meilleur, in the Grand Prix at Milan, setting a new record for the distance of 13 furlongs. Niccolo del Arco then went to Germany, beating all the best horses on the Continent at weight-for-age in the Reichchaustaldt (14 miles). The champion two-year-old in Italy this year is by another English sire, the Derby winner, Mahmoud, a grandson of the flying filly. Mumtaz Mahal. ROYAL CLASSIC DOUBLE SUN CHARIOT WINS THE THOUSAND GUINEAS (Reed. 6.30 p.m.) London, May 13. His Majesty's horse Sun Chariot, easily won the Newmarket substitute for the One Thousand Guineas, thus completing the classic double. It is the first time that a reigning monarch has won both races in the • ame year.
