AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

WANGANUI EXECUTIVE MEETS. “Eight new members were elected in February, making the total membership 4644, with 170 members overseas,” said the secretary of the Automobile Association (Wanganui), Mr. F. J. Hill, at the monthly meeting of the executive on Wednesday night. “Subscriptions are coming in well, although there have been many resignations, but members generally are sticking to the association well." Patrol G. C. Gray reported that on or about February 27 a sign-post on the main road, two miles north of Raetihi, at the junction of the RuatitiMangapurua Roads, was lifted out and turned, showing that National Park lay in the Mangapurua direction. One unfortunate motorist travelling to Tokaanu at night took this road and went about 24 miles before discover- . ing where he was heading. The result i was that he was unable to finish his' journey because of loss of petrol, i From inquiry it was ascertained that , the same post was interfered with , some time ago and a former patrol ■ secured it with fencing wire, but this ■ had rusted through. It was thought , that as this was a stopping place for the school bus some of the waiting , boys may have turned the post. It has since been firmly secured and ; fitted with an A.A. £2 reward for in- , formation sign. The secretary said the matter had been reported to the police. Accounts passed for the “Get you home" service, totalled £ll. The secretary, Mr. F. J. Hill, said that this was the smallest amount the association had to pay for this service. However, it was thought the sum would be larger next month because of the issue of petrol, bringing more cars back on the roads. A complaint was received of spikes sticking up through the decking of the Waitotara Bridge. The secretary was instructed to write to the Public Works Department asking that the defect be remedied. A member remarked that some the split tramway rails in Wanganui were a worse nuisance than the spikes on Waitotara Bridge. The matter is to be brought under the notice of the tramway department. The members present were: Messrs. P. D. England, R. G. Taiboys, T. Dix, S. G. Whittail, J. Aylmer, K. M. Little. D. Cole and Dr. E. E. Porritt.
